# Individual Sample Registration

For registering individual or single samples.

## Individual Sample Registration

Individual registrations are used for registering a single sample. For multiple sample registrations, please see the '[Batch Registration Guide](/for-researchers/register-samples/batch-registration.md)'. Each step is outlined below.

### Registration Workflow

1. Under 'Sample Registration' on the left hand panel click 'Register a sample', or 'Individual Sample Registration' on your 'MySESAR Dashboard'.
2. You can either allow SESAR to assign a suffix for you, or choose your own IGSN suffix. We recommend auto-assignment.
3. Choose the [SESAR Code](/for-researchers/accounts-and-access/choose-a-sesar-code.md) you are looking to register under. All codes assigned to your profile, personal and team(s) will be visible.
4. If there is a 'Parent IGSN' assigned by SESAR, please enter it to link with your sample. For 'external parent' samples, click 'Parent is not registered in SESAR...' and enter the parent sample name or identifier, and the parent object type (if applicable).
5. Follow the form to enter your sample metadata.
6. You can decide to restrict your metadata up to 2 years. If you choose this route, please pick a date for release. This means that your sample IGSNs will be labeled 'Draft' under your samples until the release date.
7. **Sample name**, **Longitude**, **Latitude**, and **Object Type** are **required fields**. You must fill these out to proceed.
8. 'Save draft' at any time if you want to keep your sample as 'Draft' until you are ready to register. You can access your sample under 'Samples' and 'Edit' to update and submit your sample.
9. Once you fill out the sample metadata and are ready to register, click 'Submit'.
10. After submission your sample will be 'pending review' until a curator reviews and approves your sample registration.
11. Once your sample is approved, it will show up in 'Your Samples' (personal) or 'Team Samples' (team) without any tags.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.geosamples.org/for-researchers/register-samples/individual-registration.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
